Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hello,

Lyft and Uber will be going public soon, would you recommend purchasing shares after the IPO? Growth has been great for both companies but obviously they are losing a lot of money as they grow.

What is the general strategy for IPOs ie. Lightspeed POS? Should you typically wait for first qtr results before you buy? I considered stocks like FB, MongoDB and could have done quite well. Also I believe that employees have to hold shares for at least 6 mths (not sure of exact timeframe) before they sell so wondering if that would have an impact when insiders with a considerable number of shares are allowed to sell.

Thanks,
Neeraj

Q: I just read Phil Town's "Rule #1" where he argues, amongst other things that return on equity (aka book value), sales growth, EPS growth, Cash flow and ROIC are the strongest indicators for long term growth. He argues that, ideally we'd invest in companies that have at least 10% growth in each category for each of the past 10 years - a lofty goal to be sure.

Generally, how do you feel about the aforementioned metrics to assess the quality of an invesment. Would you keep them in the same order of priority and would you add any to the mix?

For the record, the only stock I can find that comes close to meeting the 10% increase per year threshold is CSU so maybe there's something to it!

Q: Can you comment on why Organigram has not yet listed on a more senior exchange? It seems to me this would expand its attractiveness to a wider shareholder base and perhaps given its size from a market cap perspective allow the company to be included in indexes.Do they have any plans to apply to either Nasdaq and/ or TSX exchange listings?

Q: Hi Peter,
I've just become a member of 5i Research so trying to determine a few stocks to start buying into. TOY has always intrigued me and based on the recent weakness and your answers to recent questions on the company seems good for new money for a long term horizon. What other 2-3 names would you consider for new money. 3 year term horizon, don't mind short term volatility. Thanks

Q: I'm looking to invest a small amount of money for an 8 year old, primarily to introduce him to investing. I'd like to invest in companies that he can see the name of around the city, or in his hand to make it 'real' to him. Are there 2-3 such companies that you could recommend for a keen youngster? An ETF that includes recognizable companies to a child is an option, if you can recommend one also.

Q: I hold the following technology companies for a 31.66% weighting in my portfolio. I need to reduce this to a maximum weighting of 20%. Given the holdings are long term, and I wish a balance between stability and aggressive growth in this sector, which of the above companies would you cut down or eliminate to achieve this goal? Current individual weights are; CSU 4.88%, GOOGL 4.94%, AAPL 4.8%,GIB.A 3.2%, SHOP 2.57%, PHO 2.56%,MU 3.27%, NVDA 3.22%, KXS 2.21%.

Q: Looking to purchase a position in something (sector or weight not important) with good growth potential over 2-5 years looking for both US and CDN opportunities. Two names popped up recently on my radar TRQ and Chemtrade . Realize that both are completely different and would like your opinion on both and recommendations of 3-4 alternatives. Feel free to deduct credits as required.
Cheers

Q: May I please have your latest view on GRUB? I note DoorDash has very recently surpassed it as the top on-demand food delivery service in terms of dollars spent, and its increase in share seems to have come almost entirely at GRUB's expense. I have only a very small position, made much smaller over the past few months. Time to move onto one of the many better (or better behaving!) opportunities out there?
