Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Lac saw a significant sell off last week after announcing paperwork being prepared on both sides of border for possible financing and confirmation as well as final date it will list on NYSE. I'm curious if you can tell me if either of these would have caused the sell off or if one or the other or neither. Your thought are appreciated. Either way I picked up more at the bottom.

Q: I currently have a half position in CXI, I also have an almost full position in ECN. CXI isn't doing very much and I was thinking of moving the funds from CXI to ECN. Which one has the better potential?

I have Aegon ADR for a few years now. It is now moving in the right direction, but I am still down on it (in SDRSP). Is it worth holding or do you have some other International Financial companies that you think are better?

Lastly I have a half position in Alacer. Is it worth hanging on to, or would a switch to FNV or Anigco be better?

Thanks.

Q: I have been watch Conifex for some time and it has been performing quite well. Its PE is under 10, its moving average continues to climb and the stock has almost doubled since July 2017. Conifex's sells to the USA, China, and Japan. It now has operations in bioenergy and started operations of its power generation facility in BC. Price / Book is .8 and they report next month.

How would you rate CFF in light of NAFTA and is this a buy? Can you suggest any other buys in this sector or shall I hold on until NAFTA is resolved one way or another?

Thank you

Q: I didn't sell my CEF.A on the takeover. I understood there was simply a 1:1 'swap'. While TDW hasn't yet made the switch, it seems that while CEF.A was trading at close to $17, the new CEF.U is trading just above $13. I'm a little confused, have I lost 20% on the swap?

Q: Considering purchasing CGL as a disaster hedge, portfolio diversifier and future inflation hedge. I like the way it increased in value back in 2009 to 2011; more so than XGD. I also like the idea of avoiding the specific company risk of purchasing a gold company. If you like my thesis, what percentage of my equity portfolio would you suggest to provide the protection I am seeking? Thank you.

Q: Your answer could be more complete. The stock hasn't traded since Jan 12th, a surprising length of time given that the company announced record production of lithium from brine and firmed up expansion plans they had announced earlier. More confusing was the change to the capital structure of this dual listed company. How this will affect TSX shareholders in the company is hard to predict for any retail investor. Maybe the experts can puzzle it out. Their Toyota partner is also increasing its ownership share in the Australian listing. What is likely to happen when the shares start to trade again, possibly on Friday?

Q: What do you thinks of HBM's recent news release:
* HUDBAY MINERALS INC - PRODUCTION OF COPPER FORECAST TO DECREASE BY APPROXIMATELY 15%, PRODUCTION OF ZINC IS FORECAST TO DECREASE BY APPROXIMATELY 13% and PRODUCTION OF PRECIOUS IS FORECAST TO INCREASE BY ABOUT 31% COMPARED TO 2017 PRODUCTION - SEES 2018 TOTAL CAPEX OF $245 MILLION
The market seems to be punishing them and I wondered if this is now dead money or if this is an over reaction. I have held HBM in a cash account for 2 years and have seen it grow 200%. I want to continue with exposure to the Basic Materials sector to ride the global growth theme (I also own a full position in TV) and wondered if I should HOLD or SELL HBM. If sell, what would you recommend replacing it with in the same sector,

Many Thanks
Scott
