Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: My question involves whether to sell Xhy to buy more bkln making about 3% of my RRIF , as higher risk income. My understanding is that senior loans are less risky should the economy slow but still provide a good dividend. Is ther an alternative senior bond etf which you would prefer?
Thanks for your insight.

Q: What are your thoughts on selling all common stocks in a non registered account to preferred shares for an 86 year old senior ( this move is for capital preservation concerns)? Apparently the preferred share asset class has been beaten up lately, according to this senior's advisor! what would be your top 5 preferreds that you could suggest? Please take as many credits as you wish. Thank you!

Q: Hi Peter, Ryan and Team,

There are two questions in my query today. Please charge me the appropriate number of credits.

I am looking to open a new long-term position in my TFSA. Can you rank the following stocks. LSPD, DSG, TOY

In my RRSP, I want to get some US exposure. Can you recommend a stock or ETF that is for a long-term hold.

Thanks.

Q: Hi 5i
I purchased this etf for my mom. Can you tell me:
1) would 5i expect it to trade below its one year expected yield return from dec 31,2019 to dec 31 2020?
2) Mom’s capital position is currently underwater. What is 5is best guess for the closing price of each share dec 31, 2020?
3. I’m trying to assess the overall risk of the etf. How would this ETF do if a recession broke out in 2020?
4. Can you recommend a better replacement? Why is this better?
Thank you.

Q: I wrote to you on Thursday, asking if you could recommend a couple of ETFs holding Chinese companies, one US and one CAD. I have not yet heard back from you. I also wonder if you could recommend one or two CAD REITs. I have none in my portfolio. Something that will continue to do well in a down economy is my preference.
Thank you.

I notice that when I wrote on Thursday, it said I had 65 questions, and now I have 64. But since my question was not answered, or at least, I was not notified that it was answered, this seems a bit odd.

Q: This is a follow up to my questions about EFT TERs.

Thank you for the information about Canadian ETFs. What about US ones? For example, IEFA fund facts shows:

Expense Ratio 0.07%
Management Fee 0.07%
Acquired Fund Fees 0.00%
Expenses Foreign Taxes 0.00%
Other Expenses 0.00%

There is no mention of transaction fees. I find it difficult to believe the transaction fees for European markets are $0. Do you know where I would find that information?

Q: Hi 5i .. i hold these REITs currently: Bpy.un (1.5% of my portfolio), car.un (3%), chp.un (2%), crt.un (1.5%), iip.un (1.7%) ... to simplify things, and diversify further, would it make sense to sell these and just buy an etf like VRE or ZRE? (for a 60 yr old div investor .. which is preferable?) ... or, is the status quo the way to go? thx!

Q: As we don't have a good Canadian choice for stocks related to pets, what do you think of these US companies (or any others in this sector) ?
Which ones do you see as having a potential for strong growth in a near future ? Where would you invest in the sector ?
Please deduct as many credits as you see fit.
With many, many thanks,
Jacques in Montreal

Q: Hello,
My portfolio mentioned that I need to add more international exposure to my portfolio. Can you suggest some good international ETF(s) or individual stocks that would be good for me to help balance my portfolio?

Q: I'm looking for a world-wide ETF to invest in long-term, without exposure to Canada. I came across XAW. It seemed like a wise choice. I like it because it's world-wide, but doesn't include Canada, and has no bond holdings.

I am currently saving for a downpayment and have about 30% of my portfolio in XBB (which will be used for the downpayment). Plus a bunch of money invested in Canada already.
1. What do you think about XAW?
2. Any other ETFs in a similar space as XAW I should consider?

Thanks!
