Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Two general questions:

My ACB on RPI is approaching zero. When I eventually sell, will Revenue Canada consider zero as the minimum possible ACB or am I expected to continue to calculate an ACB once it goes into negative territory?

This is likely more of an issue for my eventual estate, as I assume once one gets to ACB one just collects dividends unless management does something really silly. Is there any other reason to consider selling a reliable dividend payer once ACB gets to zero?

Q: Hi,
I am extremely underweight the utilities sector, so would like to buy one utility.

I like the geographic diversity of BEP.UN and that you have it rated as “A”.
Would this be your top utility pick?

I’m not concerned about dividend yield or even total return, so much as which utility will come through the next economic downturn with the least damage.

Thanks,

Q: Good morning, Today you recommended XTC as a small cap buy. I know you have liked it in the past but.... share price chart is dreadful, recent results were not good and the sector is out of favour. Is it just a straight value play or is there a new catalyst?
Also, are they more affected or less affected by trade tensions/tariffs than MG, MRE and Linamar? Thanks for the great service.

Q: Hi, Thank you for your timely commentary on the company (and the secondary offering). We bought an initial position (1.75%) today at $49.39 and $50.22. Is it fine to Top up to 3%, right now? Looks like, you like the company. Could you please be kind enough to provide some more details as to its growth trajectory, revenue model (recurring/licensing etc), competition, debt, acquisitions approach and target market etc.. Which are the closet comparable companies in Canada and US? What is insiders/institutions ownership? What will be a possible 5i rating and will you own it in the Growth portfolio today, if had cash? Too many questions, so please deduct credits as you wish. Thanks

Q: Sorry, but another follow up on Great Canadian. If the earnings outlook for the next 2 years is essentially flat, what's the incentive to continue holding the stock in the short-term (say 1-2 years)? Is it the hope that continued share buybacks from good cash flow generation will increase earnings per share beyond what's currently in the analyst estimates? Is it the hope that they can improve operations, expand or acquire new businesses and improve earnings per share beyond what is currently estimated? Are there other things that still have you excited about the stock? Is it worthy of a 5% position in a 20-stock portfolio?
