Q: Even though the business seemed a bit boring (auto glass and collision repair), I bought BOYD quite a while ago and it has done very well. I see some comparisons with GDI: expansion into USA and consolidation in a fragmented industry. I realize they are very different companies, but I'm wondering if you could say a few words about similarities and differences. And maybe comment on management and strategy in the two companies. I have read your report on GDI and find it an interesting analysis of a boring business. Specifically, I wondering whether you think GDI has the promise that BOYD did when you first wrote about it. Thanks for great service, as always.

Q: Hi !
I am looking for a way to eventually get out of TSGY with minimal loss. In my present situation, I see no advantage to increase the capital losses in my portfolio. I am holding 270 shares of TSGI bought at $45.93 which gives me a 32% loss presently.
Buying more shares of TSGI now, let us say 130, would allow me to reduce my loss if I can sell at a higher price later.
What do you think of such a scenario and on the potential of appreciation of TSGI in the future ?

Gratefully,
Jacques, IDS

Q: Hi Peter, Ryan, and Team,

To increase my Industrial exposure, I recently bought 300 shares of GDI, and am down about 1.5% so far. Would GDI be a good candidate for tax loss selling, or do I run the risk of having to buy it back at a higher price after 30 days? Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Q: GDI: 5i seems to like this company at 30 x FPE, a lot of debt.. What am I missing? In general, I only buy large cap "dividend growers". I have only bought 2 growth type stocks before BAD and ACQ which I held for a few years and sold at huge profits - both never to return to their previous highs - so, never considered them core positions. The same would apply to GDI; however, a little gun shy on this one at these highs.

Q: Good morning all,
In an earlier answer to Dave it was suggested that "we might sell ..... and one of KXS/CSU. For clarification does this mean that you somehow consider KXS and CSU somewhat equivalent? I was surprised to see these two companies considered as one or other type positions and would appreciate a bit of an explanation.
Many thanks,
Brian

Q: Regrettably I am holding approx 2.5% position in COV and am down 30%. I see that you have cut it loose from your portfolio. Based on your rationale that the position is now too small to hold, do you feel that I can make a case to hold. I bought it for the growth and am basically a buy and hold investor. Some work, some don't. I've held RHT thru the troubles and am now just slightly up, based on buying at the bottom, at least the last bottom? Thanks for your expert opinion which sometimes is tough to swallow.

Q: CSU.CA hit a new high yesterday. About 2 weeks ago they reported 3Q results where they missed projections. After the results the stock was slightly weak and now hits a new high. I am not complaining since we own the stock (thanks to you) but I am puzzled that the stock hit a new high so soon after missing a quarter. Do you find the trading unusual or pretty normal?
Tax loss selling seems to be shaping up to be much more muted this year compared to last year. Maybe investors are just more optimistic and that is the reason for CSU recent stock action?
Thanks,
Jim

Q: If you check a couple of well read investment blogs you will find several posts suggesting 5i research is working with shorts - see TSGI, RHT, COV. You just removed COV and Largo from your portfolios. The performance of many 5i holdings in abysmal. Your recent interview suggests one of many investor errors is holding a poor performing stock for too long. It is no wonder so many mutual funds underperform the broad market when they hold all sectors and keep dogs way too long. Please explain 5i position and why you continue to add companies that are either dump and pump or poor managers.

Q: hi, 5I
Your response to a question about buying that stock:
We would be comfortable buying BEP.UN today.
My question is what parameter(s) are you rely on to say that, apart the fact that it is doing new high everyday (I like the change from limited partnership, and the market also )
But this is a one time, and it seems very expensive to me.
Your detailed answer would be very appreciated

Q: Would you consider the mind boggling selling , accusittions and new developments of the variety of REIT types in US and Canada of benefit for the investors in this company? I have invested in this REIT , in part because of stable dividends but the report makes me wonder if they are playing with too many variables.
