Q: Can you provide your assessment of Patria. How do you compare it against Brookfield or Blackrock? Is there good long term opportunity? The overview and strategy of the company looks sound, and in early innings. Thank you.
Q: With the surge in commodity prices I bought positions in BHP and RIO. My portfolio is well diversified and mainly in value supported by yield. BHP and RIO combined only represent 3.3% of the total portfolio.
What concerns me at this point is the current noise about a potential recession later this year. That could hit metals and minerals fairly hard, particularly if the recession, if it happens, is worldwide. Spending on infrastructure construction as well as the demand for manufactured products could decrease substantially.
My first question is whether you support this scenario of a late 2022 recession. My second, obviously, is whether it's time to trim, sell, or just chill and ride out any downturn in the economy as I generally do. I do like the dividends of both RIO and BHP although they could easily be cut.
Q: XP is being touted by Barron's as the "Schwab of Brazil". They see a historical imbalance between bonds and equities in retail investors portfolios and foresee XP taking advantage of a reversion to the mean (to paraphrase liberally). What is your opinion of XP? ( I recognize that, as a Brazilian equity, it is outside your preferred sweet spot; however, I value your perspective).
Thanks,
Q: DEUTSCHE POST AG seems like a international UPS type stock that's interesting. Can you tell me anything about the financials and does it look interesting to you from the view of a dividend payer? Thanks!
Q: Just read an interesting Barron's article on Equinor, a Norwegian company. It appears that this company might strongly benefit from the shortages of oil and gas in Europe being so close to this market. How would you assess this company and its capacity?
Thank you!
Q: Another note about U.K. ADRs We have held AZN for many years, as mentioned earlier there is no withholding tax, however there is a small ADR fee charged. We record it as an accounting fee to CRA and so far there has been no disagreement.
Q: Dear 5i
TEAM is still quite aways away from its 52 week high . This could be a good stock to buy on this basis assuming its earning growth is good over the next year or two . What`s your recommendation ? Is there another similar stock that you like better ?
Thanks
Bill C
Q: Just an additional answer to those who are interested in ADR'S as a way to diversify. Re costs, yes there are some. Eg, in my registered account, on my BP dividend, I get charged a fee on each dividend payout. Equates to 1.5% of the amount paid. I take it this is the local institutions custody and processing fee. Yet to see on UL but will likely be similar
Q: Hello,
I own these 2 stocks. If the US-SEC delists Chinese stocks, will I be able to sell them, and will the value be close to current value or "zero" ?. Do you recommend to exit now?
Thanks
Carlo
Q: Regarding Ivan's Mar. 28 question about these ADR's: They are all UK domiciled corporations, and the UK has no tax on dividends. Therefore there is no dividend withholding tax, even in a non-registered account. This is one of the reasons I prefer to hold ADR's of UK-headquartered stocks for foreign content - I currently can't make use of the foreign tax credit. (BTI is another one.)
Q: Hi Peter & 5i, The above ADR's trade on US Exchanges among others,
whose dividends are passed on to Canadian investors without the dreadful withholding tax, even in taxable accounts. How would you rate them from good to not so good. Also your input on these and others that you can think of, would be appreciated. As always thanks for the great service. Ivan
Q: Good Morning.
With regards to ZIM shipping, I have read that they have a 25% holding policy. This stock is in my LIF account. Will Israël our non taxable account to distribute the full dividend amount to me? Thank you.
Q: What are your thoughts on BABA short term. It seems to be so beaten up that any good news is pushing it up rapidly. How does it look on a valuation stand point if it ends up being a long term hold
Q: I received class action settlement notice on Teva. It has been a few years since I had that stock. Could you let me know what this class action settlement is about? I wonder if it's worth looking into? Thank you. Fooklin
Q: Hello,
I bought VEON as a purely speculative trade, with the intention of jumping out quickly on any decent gain. In your estimation is there anything fundamentally compelling about the stock that would suggest it is good for a long term hold? Or should my original plan hold? Thank-you.
