Q: At some point resources will recover and I am ready to slowly dip a toe into some of the more beaten up companies. I am wondering about BHP as it is a huge diversified miner, though it is not without its problems (e.g tailings pond collapse still to be dealt with). Does this seem like a good choice for a place to await a metals recovery? If the dividend gets cut, do you think it will be by more than 50%?

Thanks for your ongoing advice.

Q: Hi, I bought some baba a while ago for a long term hold..It is now down 28%..Do you think it is good to hold for a long term. My initial thoughts were that it could be the next Amazon..I am not in any rush..But is the long-term thesis still true. Thanks. Shyam

Q: Hello I own HSBC as part of my Euro-Asian exposure. Long term holding, enjoy seeing the dividend flow in since there are no capital gains to speak of.

I was just looking at the payout ratio (both from an earnings and cash flow perspective)
As per my online broker:
On an EPS basis:
Last 4 Qtr’s normalized EPS was 0, 0.26, and 0.26, 0.25 cents or Total of .77 cents.
The HSBS annual dividend is $2.50. Not good… ):
On as cash flow basis:
For annual 2014 Total cash from operations is (21,372) . Not good … ):
Last quarter 2015 shows,
Total cash from operations: 14,590, Cap ex (1,020) and Dividends paid (1,834).
So last Qtr roughly 20 % of cash flow went for cap ex and dividends….seems better this Qtr 

Can you confirm I am going about calculating payout ratios the correct way?
I realize large cap foreign banks are not your speciality but could you give some outlook for the company?
What should I be looking at when next earnings come in?

Regards
Stephane

Q: Can I get your thought on Aeg, I know that value investors have had this as a top pick many times but the stock keeps going down. Also according to Yahoo finance the book value for this company is around $14, how can a stock with a book value of $14 trade at around $5

Q: Good morning Peter and team! My 21 daughter has $20,000 to invest in a TFSA for the first time. For someone of this age, with the potential to withdraw some money within a 1-2 year horizon, would you recommend ETFs or individual stocks (or both), and what would be your top 3-5 picks at this time? Thanks! Lois

Q: Db posted a quarter lost of more than 6 billion Euro, it seems all of its core business are non-profitable. Some people are saying it is going under (scary!), and I found out DB has more than dozens of trillions "Exposure" in derivatives. My question are: what does that "Derivatives Exposure" mean and should I be a buy at current price (super low!)? I am young and i like to bet on big changes. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Tony

Q: Corby Spirit and Wine versus Diageo plc (adr)

Please comment which is a better hold for long term capital growth and dividend growth.

I hold Diageo in a rrsp account to mitigate the fully taxable dividend and would hold Corby in a taxable account to take advantage of the dividend tax credit.

Thanks for the excellent service.

Q: For a young couple just starting TFSA with $5,500.00 each
I was thinking for the total $11,000
20% xbb
30% xic
40% xsp
10% vee
Please advise if there is a possible better alternate
For a smaller portfolio should one consider individual stocks

Q: Good afternoon:
You answered a question about MELI two years ago and stated that you viewed it as "quite risky". Would your view be the same at the current time and current price?
Thank you.

Q: I am interested in some balancing to my overwhelming Canadian holdings.
1. Can you suggest some low MER ETFs to provide US and World (excluding North America)?
2. What do you think of 'fundamental' ETFs compared to those based on 'market cap'? Any suggested names for further research?
The complexity of the expanding ETF field seems self defeating to their intended purpose. Thank you for your guidance.

Q: hello 5i team,
I have about 30 percent of my portfolio in U.S. stocks, which i thankfully bought when the Canadian dollar was high. At the risk of being called the odius name of 'market Timer' i am now considering converting about ten percent of these U. S. dollars into Canadian, hoping to ride up the other side. One candidate that i have looked at cashing in is VWO.US. I have heldthis for quite awhile and am just breaking even. I recently read an article by a resected analyist saying that his company is not betting on emerging markets for awhile yet. Heput forward a pretty reasonable case for this thesis. What do you think about using this etf for this strategy, or at least some of it?
with thanks as always
