Q: I hold WCP and CHP.UN (and have for a few years)and looking to replace one or both for SIA.
Of course they are different sectors however I am looking for best choice for future growth and safety of dividend.Held in non registered account.

Q: Hello 5i:
I wish to do a little consolidating in the portfolio. Could you rank the stocks above, from a total return point of view. Obviously, the dividend is important, as is dividend growth.

Q: I have the fixed income section of my portfolio (about 20%) invested in 1-4 yr GIC ladders earning virtually nothing after inflation. This money is there to stabilize the portfolio and provide an emergency fund in the event of a very significant need for funds, but hopefully never needed. I also have 50% of my portfolio in large cap dividend paying equities that provide income in excess of current requirements so would only draw on the GIC money if the cash need was quite large.
Is there any other investment you might recommend for the fixed income portion of my portfolio that would provide similar safety and liquidity but improve returns in a rising rate environment? Thanks for the help. Jim.

Q: The value of this ETF seems to have been holding steady at between $19.50 and $20.00 over the past year. What would make this ETF move higher or lower ? There is now talk of interest rates starting to move up, plus speculation that the Fed will get rid of some of its bond holdings. Are either of those likely to have any effect on value of this ETF ?

Q: Hi,

We have a HELOC with a rate at 2.70%. We are planning to invest a portion of it ($100,000) using the smith manoeuvre strategy. Just want to ask your recommendation on 5 solid dividend yielding stocks that can give a good return and can benefit using this strategy. Any member in this group using this strategy?

Q: I, like a few others at 5i is fully aware of your position on STB and I completely agree based on it's financial condition. On any metric, it certainly does not meet the basic criteria for any solid investment.
Nevertheless, I made a second investment in January 2016 for my wife's cash acct simply to augment her monthly dividend income. As of today, we are up 70% - go figure! The only rational I can see is whether the previous very large shareholder in France has made a change in thinking after selling its very substantial holdings or else another 3rd party has recognized the attraction of STB's growing fleet of national school bus operations as leverage for a much larger merger.?? Thank you.

Q: I hold the above companies (pretty much at equal weights) in my Utilities portfolio. I need to trim because I am overweight in the sector. Perhaps I should reduce the number of holdings by 1 full position. May I please have your opinion. Thank you.

Q: I have cash in my children's RESP which I will withdraw in September. TPH.DB.E, a convertible debenture is maturing on September30, about the time I need to do the withdrawal.It is yielding over 7% (3.5% for 6 months) much better than other 6 month returns. Now that Morguard is the majority owner do you think this provides more safety making it more likely that the debenture will be paid out at face value at maturity. Does the company have adequate resources to mature the debenture?

Q: Enbridge issued a press release regarding an unsolicited mini-tender offer made by TRC Capital to purchase up to 2,500,000 common shares or Enbridge at a price of $53.38 per share which is 4.47% discount as of April 6, 2017 closing price. This type of mini-offers has happened to other publicly traded companies. What are the possible reason(s) for a company such as TRC Capital make an offer at a discount below market and believe this offer would be accepted? Perplexed… Thank you.
