Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I currently hold Maple Leaf Foods (MFI.CA) in my TFSA. It appears to be currently trading around its fair value (at least according to Morningstar). And MFI.CA just announced that it is reviewing its recent investments in plant based protein products (like veggie burgers). So it future growth prospects may be suspect.

I suspect it may be a good time to exit. Can you recommend another consumers staples stock for my TFSA as a long term hold?

Or maybe I should not have ANY exposure in the consumer staples sector in my TFSA given the slow growth and typically lower returns in the long run in this sector. Your thoughts please!

Q: After averaging down and waiting (far too long) I have entered break-even territory with this holding. There now appears to be significant momentum occurring. I am also quite overweight with this stock in a TFSA but would like to finally enjoy the benefits of price and dividend increases in the industry. Do you have any suggestions for swapping this holding for a more diversified security still expected to benefit by the uptick in energy stock values? I own no pipeline securities.

Q: For my unregistered account I am looking for your top 5 dividend stocks in Canada and 5 top US dividend stocks if purchased today. Understand that US stocks will be subject to withholding but expect the growth to compensate. Thank you and Happy New Year.

Q: Hello, recently Eric Nuttal called PXT a value trap and a chronic underperformer, and he previously owned the company. He also stated that mgmt is giving mixed messaging and needs to increase the div, do a special div, and increase buybacks. On paper I thought PXT was doing everything right. The amount of shares they have bought back and just confirmed again for 2022 is amazing. Yet year after year it doesn't get the valuation increase it deserves. As Eric says "the market does not care about PXT and there are no big buyers", despite of it having the best balance sheet and buybacks in Canadian o&g. Yes its up last year, but considerably lower than its peers, so there is the opportunity cost. My question is, do we often see companies buying back shares, great balance sheet, and doing most things right yet they never receive the valuation they should or is it a case of you need to be patient, maybe even for years to see the market eventually reward it.

Q: Hi Folks,
I am looking to add BAM.A to my TFSA for 2022 - I was wondering though, if higher interest rates and inflation could have a negative affect on the company. Appreciate your comments.
Thanks
