Q: Hi 5iResearch Team,

I’m currently quite bullish on the copper industry and would appreciate your thoughts on the best way to invest in this space. Do you think CPER is a solid choice, or would you recommend looking at specific copper companies instead? If the latter, which copper companies do you have the most conviction in at the moment?

Thank you for your time and insights—I greatly appreciate your help.

5i Research Answer:

CPER provides investors with exposure to the price of copper, while an ETF like ICOP provides exposure to companies meeting the global demand for copper (copper miners).

CPER will not be able to track the price of copper 100% accurately given it invests in futures contracts that roll over, etc. But the returns should be quite similar. Typically, investors looking for more of a conservative approach and ones that are willing to hold through bear markets are better suited for exposure to the metal itself (CPER in this case). However, for investors with more of a tactical and growth approach, the miners can provide better upside in bull markets, while also more downside potential in bear markets (ICOP in this case).

For individual names, we like: CS, TECK.B, SCCO.
