Your thoughts in this matter would be appreciated.
The TSX has also had a very strong year, and much of its underlying index is comprised of cyclical sectors (materials, industrials, and even financials with the ebb and flow of interest rates). The US economy has been undeniably strong over the years, and is currently in a better position than the Canadian economy. The S&P 500 is comprised of mostly tech names, but we like the predictability, stronger margins, and overall business models of tech names more than highly cyclical sectors.
While the S&P 500 trades at a premium valuation to the TSX, we feel this is warranted given the underlying holdings (global leaders, strong margin profiles with many tech names, etc.). Over the past 20 years, the S&P 500 has a total return CAGR of 13.4%, while the TSX has a total return CAGR of 8.3%. That is not to say over the near term that the TSX cannot outperform the S&P 500, but generally, over a long timeframe, we feel the S&P 500 will continue to benefit from the global leadership of the US economy.
