We like and suggest starting with low cost ETFs, when an account is beginning. This provides instant diversification at low costs. Individual stocks can be added as an account grows. We would suggest: VFV and XIC for US/Canada general exposure. IWO could be added for some small cap growth exposure, if desired. We have used all equities here because of the assumed very long time frame from five months.
