5 from 5i - What's fuelling US dividend growth?

Michael Southern Jul 29, 2016

Earnings season was in full swing this week and we have seen mixed results from industry leaders, leading to generally flat markets. Apple quarterly profit fell 27% while revenue fell for a second straight quarter as the company grapples with the first prolonged slump in iPhone sales since the product was introduced in 2007. On the other hand, Facebook topped $2 billion in quarterly profit, six months after crossing the billion dollar mark for the first time. There was some tough results from the Canadia resource sector, as well. Potash cut its dividend for the second time this year and lowered its full-year profit forecast, Cenovus posted a $267M loss and TRP reported a 15% drop in profit, as contributions decreased from its Canadian power division. Loblaw was a highlight with drug retail (Shoppers Drug Mart) same-store sales growth up 4.0%. Below are a few stories that caught our eyes this week:

1. Trends in corporate earnings and payout ratios are slowing US dividend growth.

2. Comparing peak-to-peak growth of the current S&P500 bull market with past cycles.

3. Nine asset allocation lessons for young investors.

4. Deutsche Bank's fall and the search for return on equity (ROE).

5. How to position emerging markets in your portfolio.

Do not forget to catch Peter Hodson, CEO at 5i Research, appearing on BNN Market Call August 3 at 6PM to discuss stocks.
