5 from 5i: Risk Management and Averaging Down

Michael Southern Jan 13, 2017

United States politics have been the focus in markets this week. President-elect Donald Trump’s long-awaited news briefing gave little clarity on his promises of boosting economic growth that has powered a record-breaking rally. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said that she sees no serious short-term obstacles to the U.S. economy and that inflation is "pretty close" to policy makers' 2 percent target. In Canadian equity, AltaGas (ALA) is in talks to merge with WGL Holdings (WGL), the parent of natural-gas utility Washington Gas, in a deal worth US$5-6B. Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) surged as it sold assets for about $2B as it looks to pay down its more than $30B debt.

  1. Watchout for these traps if you are averaging down a stock.
  2. Bogle on the US as an international market, setting equity return expectations and using smart beta.
  3. Need high-yield but less interest rate risk? This small-ETF could help.
  4. A shrinking market by company count means less small and mid-caps, and alpha opportunity.
  5. What is in store for key EM countries in 2017?
